Chapter Twenty

Aweek had passed since Trish went back to Georgia, and Julie was dealing with the blowback of Pete’s rejection.

He hadn’t called, texted or left any messages at all. Hailey hadn’t heard from him, and Julie didn’t want to ask Danny about him. She mentioned something to Grace when they were picking up the boys, but Grace didn’t know anything. Grace just looked at Julie with sad eyes and said she hoped it all worked out. Well, that wasn’t happening. They were over.

On the one hand, she was glad their relationship hadn’t gone any further, that they hadn’t formally committed to each other. On the other, she missed Pete so much. She caught herself several times dialing his phone when Axl said something cute or she just wanted to share a thought with him. And the lyrics of that song, “Love Hurts,” kept running through her mind. Well, it hurt all right. Her head hurt. Her heart hurt. Was she strong enough to get through the pain? She was devasted when Jim died. She never wanted to go through that pain again, and yet here she was. This time no one died physically, just mentally. Which was worse? She closed her eyes and sighed. Time to go home.

Julie waved good night to Barb, their part-time employee, and opened the door to a humidity blast that almost knocked her over. In seconds, her body was trapped in a sauna, and she wiped her face as moisture trickled down into her top.

It was just her luck that she’d parked a couple of blocks away. Unfortunately, Hailey didn’t have a dedicated parking lot, and the only available parking was off-street. Earlier, a lot of people had been walking around the area, and she felt lucky to get what she had.

Now there were only a few people on the street. It was still early, and the shops were open. The bistro next door was busy inside, although no one sat outside tonight. She guessed no one wanted to brave the heat and humidity. Smart.

Garlic must be on the menu tonight. The scent wafted through the bistro and over the sidewalk. Julie’s stomach growled. Did she eat lunch today? No, she didn’t have time; she just consumed the banana she brought with her.

Walking slowly through the dense humidity, she was uneasy. Why? There wasn’t a particular reason that she could think of. But she felt eyes on her back. Was someone watching her? Her skin prickled. She turned quickly, perused her surroundings but didn’t see anyone stand out. Her imagination was running wild. That had to be it. But still, that uneasy feeling wouldn’t go away. People were in and out of shops. It wasn’t as if she was alone. She certainly wasn’t so stupid to walk deserted sidewalks by herself.

She scurried on. Just one more block. Even though fewer people were moving around, she didn’t feel like the street was deserted.

Were those footsteps?

Julie was sure she heard footsteps echoing hers. She stopped. Now she heard distinct footsteps.
